Sustainable development
The concept
Sustainable development is growing more and more important since the UN conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. The conference dealt with the development of human activities that respect the environmental balance of the planet.
Sustainable development looks for a development model implying economic effictiveness, environmental requierements and a social process.
Sustainable development is officially defined as: “ a development which meets the needs of today’s generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (official definition- Bruntland report 1987). It underlines the right to develop, keeping in mind the necessary responsibilities for monitoring the impact on human activities and on the environment, while respecting fundamental social principles.
Some Canadian provinces have already voted on a “law for a sustainable development” and put pursuant to the legislative texts, introducing sustainable development as effective data of the socio-economic environment. Companies are a very important part of this program. As an environmental services supplier, Veolia Environmental Services has to be an active member of this new development process. Considering this goal, we have developed a strategy to effectively help us to meet this goal.
Understanding market changes
To ensure the permanence of our company, we have to understand and answer market needs.
Aware of the increasing complexity in waste management, companies contract specialists which are able to supply them effective, quality and security in their work while respecting the environment. Our leader position depends on our capacity to be open-minded and aware of new technologies, new solutions, and new work cultures. Furthermore, it implies a daily effort to explore new methods, to improve our processes and to improve our services.
To act in the best interest of the environment
We are experts in environmental services mangement and our mission is to transform wastes by reintegrating them into the economic cycle and reducing the harmful effects for the environment. Accomplishing our work also means that we limit the harmful effects of treatment cycles performed by us, to enlarge our vision beyond our commercial, short term requirement and to re-use waste by recycling, composting and producing new renewable energy.
To act in the best interest of people
While making the cities cleaner and by treating pollution, we improve the sanitary arrangements and the wellbeing of the populations while also acting in the best interest of the environment. In the exercise of our trades, we are also attentive with those which are closest for us: the employees of Veolia Environmental Services and the people who live where we work. As company citizens, we support sustainable development to change mentalities and practices into a more respectful direction of nature and human health.
